Background

Blue finance and the Great Barrier Reef

Bf participated in identifying private investment opportunities for the GBR that can deliver measurable benefits in addition to financial returns.

Bf was involved in the Great Barrier Reef Consortium to identify projects that may be attractive for private investment and also deliver measurable outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef 2050 Plan, developed by the Australian and Queensland governments with scientific and technical input from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, is the overarching framework for protecting and managing the Great Barrier Reef from 2015 to 2050. The Reef Trust (Department of Environment), which is a key mechanism to deliver the Reef 2050 Plan, will consolidate and strategically invest funds to maximise outcomes for the Reef. This project, funded by the Department of the Environment, will identify investment opportunities that can deliver benefits for the Reef. In collaboration with a sister project – to identify innovative financial mechanisms – these projects will identify a suite of potential private investments that will leverage existing government funding commitments (of $2 billion AUD) to achieve the goals of the Reef 2050 Plan.
