MANAGEMENT FOR MPAs

Project Management Offices established in-country to provide required skills not typically found in MPAs (e.g. entrepreneurial) and assistance with environmental management.

IMPROVEMENTS TO AND MONITORING OF MARINE HABITAT HEALTH

e.g. sustainable fishing & tourism activities, water quality improvements, strengthening reef resilience, etc.

COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT

e.g. development of enforcement management plans, effective patrolling, informed rangers

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND LIVELIHOOD ENHANCEMENT

e.g. awareness campaigns and creation of new income generating activities (primarily fishers).

SUPPORT TO TOURISM

e.g. MPA branding, UW attractions, visitor centre, etc.

MANAGEMENT AND REVENUE MECHANISM

e.g. marketing & business plans, efficient user fee collection, innovative financial instruments, etc.

SUPPORT MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING PROCESSES

MPAs should have clear zonation for different sustainable activities. Zones might include conservation, recreation and priority fishing for example; with different management objectives, but all based on ensuring the health of marine ecosystems.
